Troubling Element Number Four Harvard Westlake’s Application for Their Sports Campus
This is the fourth in our ongoing weekly series of News & Notes that explores key parts of the Harvard Westlake Sports Campus Application at the Weddington Golf & Tennis location.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Harvard–Westlake has applied to the Planning Department for Special Events on their “Sports Campus” at Weddington Golf and Tennis.
The Environmental Assessment Form, under the Special Events section, asks the question:
“Will there be special events not normally associated with a day-to-day operation (e.g. fund Raisers, Parent teacher nights, athletic events, graduations)?” Harvard–Westlake checked the YES box.
“If YES, describe events and how often they are proposed.” Harvard-Westlake’s Response: “Special Events are proposed throughout the year that would go beyond the standard hours of operation.”
Harvard-Westlake has not identified what special events are planned. Events such as:
Swim meets (Olympic Size pool)
Basketball games (Intercollegiate competitions)
Soccer games
Lacrosse games
Graduation
Fundraisers
Special Events will generate traffic and parking issues. Traffic leaving the Sports Campus, will go south on Whitsett, past the Fire Station to Ventura Blvd.
Special Events would, according to Harvard-Westlake, “go beyond the standard hours of operation”. The standard hours of operation are Monday-Friday 7 am to 9:30 pm and Saturday-Sunday 7 am to 6 pm.
Because Special Events can go past 6:00 pm, which is “beyond the standard hours of operation” on the weekend, it now explains why Harvard-Westlake is applying to exceed the 30-foot height limit for light poles to have 15 poles at 50 ft. high, 6 poles at 60 ft. high, and 3 poles at 80 ft. high.
* The above is based on the initial Application filed with the Department of City Planning by Harvard Westlake. We will keep you updated as the process moves forward.
